“Oh Canada!” Featuring: The AMP One-Size Duo

As a cloth diapering mamma, I love to try new diapers. Between our 2 boys, my husband and I have tried our fair share of diaps! As a store owner, I only sell products that I myself have tested, and love!  Each parent has their own preference when it comes to cloth diapering. Some simply want what is cheapest- others want was is most convenient, and some lean toward the “cute” factor.

At Nature Bums, choosing Canadian made products is very important to us! And, thankfully, there are some amazing Canadian Diapers! Did you know that Baby Kangas, Sugarpeas, Bummis, Monkey Doodlez and AMP (Annia Marie Padorie) are all Canadian companies? What a fabulous opportunity to support these businesses. For the few products that are not made in Canada, we have made certain that they have been manufactured under fair labor conditions. I know this is a bit of a tangent- but, this is the first feature in what I am calling the “Oh Canada!” series. Here you will find my personal reviews of some of these fabulous Canadian products. First up is the AMP One Size Duo Diaper.

I have tried many One-Size Diapers- and have often found that a “One Size” can sometimes leave you in the in-between phase (baby is too large for the smallest setting, to small for the next size up.) I will say that I have been pleasantly surprised with the AMP! It really is a “One Size” fits all. The feedback from our customers has been amazing, and their One Size Diaper Kit really does get you started with CD’s for an AMAZING price!

What I love about this diaper:

  • fits from 7-38 lbs
  • can be used as a pocket diaper or an AI2 (all-in-two)
  • SUPER soft PUL (waterproof exterior)
  • with multiple snaps, it is very adjustable for all shapes and sizes of babies!
  • has a waist and hip snap, so no “droop”
  • the elastics are super stretchy, and keep inserts in place when used as a cover
  • comes in a ton of colors- lots of pinks, brights, pastels, boy and gender neutral options!
  • elastic casing doesn’t leave red marks, but provides amazing fit!
  • Has elastic on both the back and the front (around the tummy- so inserts can’t sneak out)

I decided to put this diaper to the test- and paired it with a triple layer hemp insert for my heavy wetting 9 month old. He always wears a fleece or wool cover at night, and we haven’t had a lot of success with just a regular pocket diaper. Bring in the AMP!- we have never had a leak with him being in this diap for 12hrs over night. My boy still nurses all throughout the night, and I honestly could not believe it! The super soft fleece allows you to stuff the AMP OS as a pocket diaper, so baby is not uncomfortable from the wet insert. His insert will be sopping by morning, but he isn’t even bothered because of the fleece.

I also really love that at 23 lbs, my 10 mth old son is on the medium setting. My boy is chunky! In our other One-Size diapers he is already into the largest setting.

For a One-Size, this diaper is very affordable- because it can be used as a pocket, or as a diaper cover! Which means you need fewer shells. It can be used with the AMP hemp or bamboo inserts, but also works well with prefolds- and even provides a nice fit over fitted diapers.

If you are already using a 2 part system, I would recommend investing in this shell for night time, day trips, or as a One-Size option that will grow with your baby well into Toddlerhood. If you are starting out fresh, I would suggest 2 of the One Size Kits. Our small microfiber inserts or small prefolds work really well for new babies. The Hemp inserts that come with the kits are a bit bulky for a teeny newborn, however- if you do get some small inserts or prefolds, these can also be used in the future as doublers.

I will honestly say, this is one of the first diapers I have found that I really feel doesn’t need any improving! It seems to work great for boys or girls, thin or chunky babies! My husband has never been a huge fan of snaps- so he doesn’t love doing this diaper up on our wriggly boy- but, that is pretty much the only negative feedback I can give. Along with that, I will say that baby G has pulled off several of our older velcro tab diapers- but has never gotten snaps open!

I hope that was helpful, and that you check back for  some more”Oh Canada” features!

What you need to know about leaks and smells!

I have had several moms coming to me in a state of confusion and frustration. They have been cloth diapering for quite some time- 9-12mths and beyond- and suddenly their diapers have started to leak. They add more inserts, doubling up, and creating a big ol’ baby bum. Alas, their diapers continue to leak! Frustration sets in, and they find themselves using disposables. “Is this normal?” they ask.

This is my answer. Yes, and no. While many parents (myself included) can find that their diapers begin to leak after extended use, it *should not* be happening. If your diaper is the proper size and fit for you baby, and no inserts or prefolds are exposed outside of the water proof layer- you should not be having leaks. If you are, I have found that 99% of the time, the culprit is detergent build up and residue. You may not have switched your soap, however, after an extended period of too much soap, or a type of soap with enzymes etc- your diapers no have a layer of residue, prohibiting your inserts from soaking up the urine.

So, what do you do now? If you do find that you are in this position, I first recommend washing your diapers, and then running them through a hot wash cycle until the water is running clear- NO SUDS! If you find there are suds after your first cycle, you pretty much have a guarantee that you have been using to much soap. Something that works wonders when it comes to getting out residue is our Rockin Green Hard Rock Detergent. I would recommend doing a soak in your washing machine, sink or tub- overnight. This truly works wonders for residue. After the soak, run your diapers through on a hot wash with cold rinse.

But my diapers stink. I don’t want to cut back on detergent. Often times parents will find that not only do their diapers leak- but they have a horrible odor as soon as baby wets. They smell fine when dry- but then bam. Stink! So the thought process goes- “hmmm, my diapers smell. They must not be getting clean enough. I need more soap.” And you unknowingly find yourself perpetuating the problem. The reason for the smell, is that along with the soap residue (soap that is not getting washed out) you now also have urine residue. All of the fibers in your inserts are clinging to soap and urine- and are simply no longer getting completely washed through. I would reccomend using a wet towel in the hot wash of your cycle- especially if you have a front loader. There needs to be a lot of water swishing around those diapers, in order for them to get fully clean.

If you have not just an odour- but a strong ammonia smell (the kind that burns your nose when you open the bag) then there is really only one solution I have found. And I will say- it’s awesome! IT deals with stinky toddler pee like a charm. The Rocking Green Funk Rock (these people have got it figured!) Is a special formulation made to target ammonia buildup. A soak with this should have your problem solved.

After your diapers have been soaked and rinsed- the following wash routine is what works for us- and many!

  1. Prewash Cold/Cold Gentle Cycle (gentle uses more water in an HE machine)
  2. Add 2 tbsp Rockin’Green Hard Rock Detergent (more if you use a standard machine) and wash on Hot/Cold with an extra rinse.
  3. Dry inserts in dryer, lay covers flat to dry. *Most waterproof covers are safe to go in the dryer, and we do sometimes dry them in the dryer- however, I find air drying prolongs the life a bit longer- especially keeps Velcro cleaner.

On occasion, you can use oxygen bleach with your inserts. If you use microfiber, and they are expecially bad (after 18mths of use or so) and baby is getting ammonia rash, then it would not be the end of the world to do a Hot Cycle with some regular bleach to disinfect etc. Remember to thoroughly rinse them. Some parents will use vinegar in the rinse cycle, however I do not recommend using vinegar with Bamboo or Hemp. I also do not recommend bleaching bamboo or hemp, as it will break down the natural fibers.

If you start things out right, you should be able to avoid most leaking problems. With my first baby, I didn’t know which detergents could cause problems. With my 2nd baby (same diapers) I have avoided these problems by using Rockin Green from the start, sunning, and air drying my diapers often- and using lots of HOT water.

Oh Dreaded Night Time….

When I first started CD’ing my son, I never new the woes we would face when it came to the “night time diaper.” At first he was fine in his little pocket, with a booster. But over time, NOTHING seemed to keep this nursing boo dry. We spent many nights with a crying baby on our hands- simple because he was soaked from head to toe by 3 or 5 am…. what a PAIN. I began to think it was impossible to cloth diaper at night.

As I began talking to other parents, many of them “shamefully” admitted to using a sposie at night. How could it be that there was not a night time diaper that could hold the pee, without being 6 inches thick! And so our quest for a night time solution began.

Many parents don’t have problems with over night- I often find these are parents of girls, or still little sleepers. Tummy sleepers will often have problems with leaking. Boys seem to be the most problematic, simply because the concentration of their pee is mainly on the front of the diaper.

So, in all of our testing- what did we find?

A) The Sugarpeas 2 Size Organic Hemp diaper, with a doubler placed on the OUTSIDE of the diaper, and then paired with a Sugarpeas fleece covers is golden. I also reccomend using a stay dry fleece liner inside of the SP, so that your baby doesn’t wake due to the feeling of wetness. (some parents will put a Bummis wrap over the Hemp first, then add the fleece for extra insurance)

B) Double or Triple Stuff the Pocket of your choice with inserts- microfibre is okay, but I prefer Bamboo or Hemp as they are less likely to stink. (Some parents begin to have bacteria problems with microfibre, which results in a strong ammonia smell come morning. Chances are you need to wash with more soap and water- a Rockin’ Green soak or two will probably cure this.) Place a fleece cover over top of said pocket and you are good to go. This is our most used method- since we started out with pockets, and had mostly OS PUL pockets. Prefolds also work wonderfully as a night time insert for pockets.

C) WOOL! Now, I was initially very intimidated by wool. However- then I found Bumby, and I was so happy! It is so user friendly- easy to wash, and lanolize- just use  a little lansinoh breast cream on the inside of the cover- and you are good to go. And the best part- she is very affordable. Pair this cover with the diaper of your choice- or either of the above mentioned methods.

(visit our facebook fan page for more info on purchasing these covers! We are working to get them up online, but they are at the farmer’s market)

I currently have 2 fleece covers that I rotate for my little guy- and use my woolie for my toddler who is day and nap trained- but not quite there for night. He doesn’t really wet very heavily at night though.

And those are my thoughts for night time. My fleece are my favorite- and a great alternative to wool for those with allergies. The elastic on the thighs and waist offer a great fit- and the snaps allow for quite a wide weight range.

So, night time woes be gone! No need to dread the bed… ok. I am done ;-) And there you have, a night time solution!

The Easy Fit will be here soon!

We are so excited that the Easy Fit AIO diaper is making it’s way to Nature Bums! This is the newest style of AIO on the market- and is the “must have” diaper of the season ;-) I can’t wait to see the prints in person- they are too cute! This is a one-size diaper, made by the same company as the Pocket Tot one-size. However, because of the attached insert, this diaper is also available in a “tini-fit” style, to minimize bulk on little babes. It fits from 5-12 lbs, and will retail for $20 each. We are working on getting this diaper up online, and will have it available for special order. If you plan on attending one of our fabulous Cloth Workshops, we will have a sample for you to see :-)

Visit our website for a complete range of colors and prints, as well as an informative video that shows you just how the Easy Fit works, and how it differs from standard AIO’s. It’s unique design allows for a faster drying time, and more adjustable insert system for different absorbency needs.

I will be sure to post when they arrive! Oh, did I mention that R&G has arrived, as well as their pail shakers? I am Lovin’ their soap! I went for Smashing Watermelons- and it smells pretty good. Gwen is raving about her pail shaker- no more smelly bag after a few night time diapers make their landing.

On the note of reviews- did you know we have a parent review section on our Website? If you have tried any of our products, we’d love it if you post your feedback! From one parent to another!

Until next time. :-)

New and Exciting Things!

As Gwen and I approach the 2 year Anniversary of Nature Bums, we are excited to see all of the growth that has occured- and the exciting new prospects and products for the future! We started our business out of a need for some great local products, that didn’t cost an arm and a leg! As Cloth Diapering Mammas ourselves, we had both purchased online for our babes- and weren’t quite sure exactly what we were getting. It would have been so great to actually see and feel the products we were about to purchase. There are some things that can not be gained after hours of reading on forums, and looking at pictures.

As we approach the Fall, we have begun to do even more product reasearch. We have carried several lines since our inception, at one point we offered Happy Heinys and Fuzzi Bunz. While many people like these diapers – as much as we tested the Happy Heiny’s they simply leaked time after time. The Fuzzi Bunz were a quality diaper, yet we were disappointed when they stopped making them in the USA, and so we looked for products that were made a little closer to home.

Each and every product line we offer has been tested by us, on our own children. We feel confident that we are supplying our customers with ethically made, quality products that are safe for their babies, and fair to their wallets! After all, the reason so many people turn to cloth diapering is to save money. We don’t have the mark ups of big box or brick and mortar stores, yet we still offer our customers the opportunity to see our products up close and in person via the Red Deer Market, Cloth Workshops or Home Visits.

Our store consists of a very specific inventory- products that work! From our cloth diapers to baby carriers- WHAM made nursing covers and accessories, each item is selected with care and attention to quality. We do carry some of the most popular brand names on the market, and we also carry some lesser know, yet high quality products that we have sought out and made available to our local parenting community.

As we gear up for fall, we have some new products on their way! We will be launching the NEW Easy Fit Diaper from Tots Bots. This is a very unique One Size AIO that offers the adjustability of a pocket diaper, yet the convenience of a traditional AIO. Plus they come in 6 ADORABLE prints- and they cost the same as the SOLIDS!! (even more exciting, right?) We expect these diaps to arrive at the end of September. We will also be offering the tini-fit, which is for itty bitty babes from 5-12lbs.

We are also so excited to now be carrying Rockin’Green cloth diaper Detergent. This stuff is the real deal. If you have been battling stinky, ammonia ridden diapers- a soak or two in this stuff is the cure! The reviews are amazing! Here is a bit of what parents are saying about Rock and Green:

- I’m amazed and thrilled that your detergent didn’t break my baby out! My diapers have never looked better!

- I love, love, love the detergent, so I will be back for more. It was like a cloth diapering miracle! Now, what the heck do I do with 30lbs of unused Country Save?

-I am breaking up with Charlie! No more rashes for me- I am moving to Rockin’ Green for all our laundry!

-I just want to tell you that after many many washes with your detergent I can’t bear to use anything else! It is fantastic for our water and gets my dipes so so so clean. Much better than anything else I have used. Thank you! And if you ever think you are going to stop making it please let me know so I can make a LARGE order.

-It is fabulous. It’s wonderful!! I need more!!

- Clean diapers, no stinkies and no extra rinses. Liked it a lot!

-So much BETTER than my old routine! It will be much easier on my front loader. I won’t have to strip the dipes all the time anymore.

-I thought that it got my clothes and diapers just as clean, if not cleaner, than other detergents and it smelled incredible! Baby C is usually pretty sensitive to soaps, lotions, and detergents but she had no sensitivity issues with this detergent! I’d definitely recommend this detergent to everyone.

-This stuff smells like heaven in powdered form!

-You have created a very high-quality product that takes a lot of the guess-work out of cloth diaper laundry.

Our search for great products hasn’t stopped! Plus we have 2 new babes, and 2 new bottoms that need to do their share of testing! Up next- the NEW and improved Bamboozle. Many of you may recognize this fabulous diaper from Bummis! Well, it has been revamped, and we love the new soft and stretchy Bamboo Fibres. This diaper is a 2 sized diaper that closes with super sturdy velcro tabs, so you can get a great fit every time! We are in the process of trying it out- and if we like it, we hope to offer it in the early winter.

Well thats all for now! Thank you to all of customers- parents and babies alike, who have supported us, and helped us to continue to grow and thrive in our community! We look forward to seeing some new faces as we partner with some great community organizers in Red Deer, Blackfalds, Penhold, Rocky Mtn. House and hopefully more communities to come!

Cloth Diapering on a Budget

For many families on a budget, cloth diapering is one more way to help cut down on the costs of child rearing. Why spend $1000′s of dollars on something that will simply be tossed in the garbage. Disposables are expensive!

I have tried many different types of cloth diapers- from All-in-Ones, to One Size, fitteds and pockets! One of my all time favorite systems are prefolds paired with a waterproof cover. The best wraps I have ever found are made right here in Canada, by Montreal’s own, Bummis! These wraps are fabulous. No more pulling on and off- simply fold your prefold as needed, and tuck inside one of Bummis fabulous covers. Available in several different styles- the Super Whisper Wrap, and the Super Brite are 2 of the better known wraps. Both close with sturdy velcro tabs. The Super Brite boasts an additional leg gusset- which offers abit of a different fit for baby thighs.

Bummis Super Brite- green!

For the first 2 years of diapering my babe- I always paired my prefolds with a snappi fastener. This is a nifty little invention that replaced the need for pins. However, with my second, I decided to try Bummis reccomendation, and simply place my prefold into the diaper cover, and fasten to baby! This works fabulously!! The wrap offers a snug and secure fit, so no shifting or bunching of the diaper. Simply change out the Organic Cotton Prefold and allow the covers to air dry in between (as long as no poop has made its way onto the cover)

This simple 2 part system offers convenience, cuteness, as well as the cost savings that parents are looking for. While Bummis offers newborn, infant, and baby sized prefolds and covers- most babies will simply need infant (8-16lbs) and baby (15-30lbs) sized prefolds. Some kids may need to go up to a Large sized cover for super duty night time diapers.

shown: a wrap layered with a prefold and bio liner on top

The amazing Organic Cotton Diapering Kits from Bummis come with everything you need to get started with cloth (except for wipes).  The Infant sized kit comes complete with the following:

-24 Organic Cotton Prefolds

-4 Super Whisper Wraps (small)

-2 Super Brites (small)- this is the cover with leg gussets

-5 reusable fleece liners

-3 rolls of  small Bio soft liners (300 liners total)

-1 extra large sized fabulous wet bag

-1 sample of Bum Bum Balm

-1 sample of Rockin’ Green Cloth Diaper Detergent

The contents of a Baby Sized Kit

Most babies will be fine to start of with this size. If you are not sure how to fold your diapers to get a nice fit on your newborn, don’t worry! Each kit comes with a thourough instruction booklet- including washing details!

The Baby sized kit- which starts at 15 lbs and runs up to about 30lbs includes:

-18 Organic Cotton Prefolds

-2 Super Whispers Wraps (medium)

-2 Super Brites (medium)

-1 Extra Large Fabulous Wet Bag

- 1 roll of large bio soft liners (100liners total)

- 5 reusable fleece liners

- Sample of Bum Bum balm

-Sample of Rockin Green Cloth diaper detergent

The fleece liners are great for naps or overnight, so that baby is not sitting in moisture all night. Day time changes occur often enough that fleece liners are not necessary for every diaper. However, additional fleece liners can always be purchased separately. I do reccomend getting a few “doublers” for over night and naps if needed- so that your baby’s diaper can last a little bit longer without needing to be changed during their sleep hours. However, this is something you can wait to see if you need.

The Bummis kits are $175+tax and $156+tax respectively! That is a lot cheaper than going for disposables- and you are still getting quality that you can trust.

This video shows you just how easy it is to diaper with Bummis!
